A Leucistic Kereru

So happy to finally share these shots with you all! I spotted this leucistic kereru briefly during my feed rounds at Pukaha National Wildlife Centre and have been carrying my camera ever since. Must be at least 2 months in counting. Was so grateful she sat and posed for a bit the other morning. She’s stunning!

Leucisim is a rare genetic mutation that causes the birds feathers to be white instead of their usual colours. Birds like this tend to not survive as long as their kind due to being more obvious to predators, however this kereru has been sighted now well over a year and is doing well - quite often seen with a 'mate' so fingers crossed we see more of this bird in the future.
