Coco's Story

A few years back, Coco was fortunate to have been rescued by a loving family in the South Island. By the sounds of it, life wasn't too kind to her before this rescue, and you could see the years of neglect had taken a toll on her, physically and emotionally. Coco joined our family in December 2019 and adjusted so quickly to our crazy family life it was like she had been here for years!

Her feathers are slowly growing back, by giving her loads of interaction and things to chew, we are hopeful that she will leave her feathers alone and allow them to grow back. The damage may be too far gone, but we have to try! She steals the hearts of everyone she meets and is such a joy to be around. Just be prepared to offer up loads of head scratches!

Coco will always be a part of our family, but many birds, like galahs can live for many years, often outliving their owners. Before thinking of buying a bird, we highly recommend visiting wildlife refuges and reserves to see these stunning birds live in the wild, enjoying their natural environment. See how they live free and see how they interact with one another and think about what you can offer a bird in your home. Many birds end up in shelters or up for rehome for various reasons, through no fault of their own. Some are shy and just need time, others can be super boisterous. They each have their own personality.

Try to support local rescues when and where you can. You never know who you might meet.
